VANCOUVERISM a Planning Term
vænˈkuːvərism // (n) / an urban planning and architecture phenomenon in Vancouver characterized by a large residential population living in the city centre with mixed-use developments, typically with a medium-height, commercial base and narrow, high-rise residential towers, significant reliance on mass public transit, creation and maintenance of green park spaces, and preserving view corridors of the mountains /
But in my case, it was the examination and exploration of what Vancouver has to offer as city saturated in good coffee and a high ratio of public appreciation… as far as I could tell.
After spending a week in the city of Vancouver, I found it to be a great segue into this project. I managed to gather a number of great connections in and around the coffee industry as well as Instagram and photography that I really feel set the stage as I make my transition off North American soil. These connections included friends and friends of friends who became friends, cafés that were referred to me by these coffee friends, and even a short day trip to the coffee hub of Seattle, WA thanks to my wonderful aunt.
I also had the pleasure of getting involved in a few creative projects in the photography and media realm of Vancouver such as skating in a shoot for Canon Canada, taking a new-found friend as a model to Lynn Canyon, and even getting together with several local Instagrammers.

As I write this, I’m sitting on the long but comfortable plane ride across the pond to Shanghai enroute to Kunming, and I’m excited to see what China has brewing as I take a 3 day layover before Japan.
On a special and slightly sneaky note, I just got back from joining the Mile High Coffee Club, taking over the back kitchen to serve myself up a lovely Ethiopian Aeropress from Vancouver’s 49th Parallel Roasters.
